He takes over the role from Shadab Khan and will work closely with Shaheen Shah Afridi who was named full-time T20I captain News The Pakistan Cricket Board [PCB] has appointed Mohammad Rizwan as the vice-captain of the T20I side ahead of the team's five-match series against New Zealand. The wicket-keeper batter replaces Shadab Khan in the role, who is on the road to recovery following an ankle injury, which ruled him out of the New Zealand tour. Rizwan's appointment is the latest in a slew of changes that have happened in the Pakistan leadership group and board structure after Babar Azam stepped down as captain from all formats of the game following the 2023 ODI World Cup. Pakistan finished fifth on the table with just four wins in nine matches and failed to qualify for the knockouts. The 31-year-old Rizwan will be working as a deputy to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was named captain of the T20I side. Rizwan has prior leadership experience, both on the international and domestic...

India fast bowler has been out of action since the ODI World Cup final on November 19 News Mohammed Shami has said his recovery from an ankle injury is "on track" and that he hopes to make a comeback during India's five-Test series against England starting on January 25. "My rehabilitation is well on track and the medical experts at NCA are happy with my progress," he told Times of India. "There is slight stiffness in my ankle but that's fine. I have started my training sessions and I believe I will be able to make a comeback in the England series. Shami was included in India's Test squad for the two matches in South Africa, subject to fitness. He did not travel with the team and was subsequently withdrawn from the series, which India drew 1-1 by winning the second Test in Cape Town, after not recovering in time. No SA20 without South Africa's best - du Plessis and Markram okay with new reality

No SA20 without South Africa's best - du Plessis and Markram okay with new reality South Africa expect to see solid benefits from their T20 league in the not-too-distant future News The success of a T20 league relies on a strong contingent of active local international players, Faf du Plessis , a veteran of the circuit who will lead Jo'burg Super Kings for the second season of the SA20, believes. "The secret always lies in the national players being available," du Plessis, former South Africa captain, told a select group of journalists during captains' day in Cape Town two days out from the start of the tournamen t. "I've played in some competitions where you get the national players for only half the competition or a third of the competition, and then the standard really drops." And therein lies the conundrum that has caught fire over the last week, since the extent of South Africa's understrength Test squad that will play in New Zealand becam...

News Clarke: Smith would be No. 1 opener in the world in 12 months However, he believes Pat Cummins' comments about not moving too many players is significant Former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes that Steven Smith would become the best opening batter in the world if he was given the task of replacing David Warner, but still sees Cameron Green as the likelier route the selectors will take. The squad for the first Test against West Indies will be named on Wednesday and will mark the start of a new era following Warner's Test retirement. The narrative around who could replace him has shifted from a specialist opener - one of Cameron Bancroft , Marcus Harris or Matt Renshaw - to finding a way to accommodate Green. Smith has been the only incumbent player to say he wants to open, but both captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald sounded reluctant at the conclusion of the Pakistan series. "If he [Smith] wants to open the batting and they give him the chan...

NEWS Thunder committed to Sydney as captain Green defends pitch

NEWS Thunder committed to Sydney as captain Green defends pitch Ricky Ponting suggested the club might need to consider moving to find better conditions Sydney Thunder remain committed to their western Sydney home, despite question marks over a Showground wicket labelled "substandard" by Ricky Ponting . Thunder's seven-wicket loss to Perth Scorchers on Monday was plagued by questions over a slow, spinning wicket that produces the lowest scoring rates in the Big Bash League. Ashton Agar took 2 for 6 off four overs for Scorchers, as Thunder were kept to 137 for 8 from their 20 overs. Scorchers reached their target with five balls to spare. It is not the first time the Sydney Showground wicket has come under attack, with Scorchers captain Ashton Turner labelling it "disappointing" in early 2019. The run-rate at the Showground of 7.76 since the BBL's inception is the lowest of all regular grounds, with spinners and off-pace deliveries the norm. That raises q...
